How does flame retardant clothing protect?
The flame-retardant clothing is quite easy to recognize in our webshop. In the photos of this type of protective clothing you will see an image of a shield with a flame in it. Do you see this icon next to the work jacket you want to order? Then you can be sure that this jacket is made of materials on which flames do not spread quickly. The manufacturer can achieve this by using substances that are inherently flame retardant or fire resistant, such as Kevlar or Twaron. We call these substances inherently flame retardant. However, with some materials it is also possible to apply a certain protective layer or coating, which makes the fabric fire-resistant, even if it is not naturally fire-resistant. This is a good option, but keep in mind that this protective layer can wear out and it is often not visible to the eye if the work jacket is no longer flame retardant.
Anti-static work jackets
Electrostatic energy is created by friction and such a discharge has enough energy to ignite or explode a flammable liquid or gas. To prevent fire or explosions caused by electrostatic discharge, it is important to wear anti-static safety clothing.
Work jackets with the EN 1149 standard are anti-static work jackets and meet the requirements for electrically conductive clothing. The anti-static work jacket must be used as part of a completely grounded system (including in combination with conductive safety shoes). The clothing prevents the formation of sparks, which also prevents explosions.
Multiprotectors
Of course, during welding work it is also important that your work clothing does not catch fire. Because there is a different standard for this (EN ISO 11611) than for flame-retardant clothing (EN ISO 11612), there is a separate icon for this. However, it is often the case that different forms of protection are combined in one work jacket. This is certainly the case with the multi-protectors from our range.
