A windproof and waterproof work jacket is rated by its water column. This number, expressed in millimeters (mm) / Pascal (PA), indicates how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before leaking.

• A jacket with a water column of 8000 PA / 800mm offers protection against light rain. (EN 343 Class 1 untreated or Class 2 treated)
• From 13,000 PA / 1300 mm, a jacket is suitable for prolonged rain or harsh conditions. (EN 343 Class 3)
• For the toughest conditions, 20,000 PA / 2000 mm is required. (EN 343 class 4)

In addition, the EN 343 standard defines the most important properties. This European standard indicates the degree to which a work jacket offers protection against rain and wind, combined with breathability.
