A windproof and waterproof work jacket is rated by its water column. This number, expressed in millimeters (mm) / Pascal (PA), indicates how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before leaking.
- A jacket with a water column of 8000 PA / 800mm offers protection against light rain. (EN 343 Class 1 untreated or Class 2 treated)
- From 13,000 PA / 1300 mm, a jacket is suitable for prolonged rain or harsh conditions. (EN 343 Class 3)
- For the toughest conditions, 20,000 PA / 2000 mm is required. (EN 343 class 4)
In addition, the EN 343 standard defines the most important properties. This European standard indicates the degree to which a work jacket offers protection against rain and wind, combined with breathability. The higher the classification, the better the jacket performs in wet and windy conditions. This way, you know exactly what to expect from your work jacket.
