Our RWS safety vests comply with RWS guidelines
Want to buy a RWS safety vest? Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) uses the European standard EN-20471, which is aimed at high-visibility clothing (called safety clothing and signal clothing). The standard for this clothing stipulates that a minimum amount of fluorescent material is used for the clothing (usually yellow or orange) and that the required reflective material is used.
What are the RWS guidelines?
Before safety clothing becomes work clothing approved by Rijkswaterstaat, it must meet a number of important conditions. In all cases this will involve High Vis work clothing. Employees who need RWS work clothing almost always have to deal with traffic situations and safety must of course be guaranteed. That is why RWS vests must always have stripes of reflective material. These can reflect light, which is an important factor for visibility.
For work on roads within built-up areas, Rijkswaterstaat recommends wearing RWS vests that are fluorescent orange in color, while for work on or along the tracks, fluorescent yellow is the basic color for high-visibility clothing. The Rijkswaterstaat standard also states that a minimum amount of fluorescent substance must be used for this.
The EN ISO 20471 standard for increased visibility
The minimum standard that work clothing must meet to be called High Vis work clothing is the European standard EN ISO 20471. Is your clothing High Vis according to this standard? This means that the work clothing visually emphasizes your presence in accordance with European agreements. This helps you to stand out in dangerous situations. In the case of traffic controllers or railway workers, the potential danger will mainly arise from a limited amount of light in the workplace, but High Vis work clothing also helps in other situations. For example, your view can also be partially obscured by smoke, fog or gas fumes. In those cases, the colors fluorescent orange and yellow have proven that you are better seen than in other colors, which in some situations can blend in with the environment.
The most important points from the RWS guidelines and specifications:
- The garment must be completely uniform in color and may contain only 1 color (except for the reflective stripes). Fluor Orange is used for road workers. Fluorescent Yellow is worn by rail workers, the managers wear Fluorescent Orange.
- On non-motorways and roads within built-up areas, RWS clothing must in any case comply with the EN ISO 20471 standard.
- The reflective stripes on the clothing must have the shape of a Roman II (sometimes also called the shape of an H), with the vertical bands running over the shoulder. There must also be a vertical stripe on the outside of the sleeves and trouser legs.
- For roadworks on or along motorways, only class 2 and class 3 of the EN ISO 20471 standard are permitted.
- For rail workers: ProRail has made it mandatory to wear a yellow safety vest or jacket. This regulation applies to all ProRail business premises. The additional requirements are that no cross-shaped stripes are used and no red or orange undergarments may be worn under yellow clothing.
- Printing a text or logo on RWS clothing: personalization of High Visibility work clothing must meet strict requirements. Placing a logo on reflective clothing is therefore subject to rules. As a specialist in this area, Unishore Bedrijfskleding BV will help you with this. We print your RWS clothing according to the requirements of Rijkswaterstaat.
