High Visibility Overalls
High visibility overalls, also known as hi-vis or warning clothing, are specially designed to make the wearer maximally conspicuous in any work environment. Whether you choose striking orange overalls or bright yellow variants, a high visibility overall is an essential part of your personal protective equipment (PPE).
Like standard reflective models, every high-vis overall must comply with the European standard EN ISO 20471. The use of fluorescent fabrics makes you visible during the day and at dusk, while the reflective strips do their job in complete darkness. These high-vis overalls are ideal for road construction, logistics, and industry.
What is the difference between reflective overalls and high visibility overalls?
In practice, you will find that "reflective overall" and "high visibility overall" are used synonymously. There is no essential difference between the two terms: high visibility overalls are simply reflective overalls.
Both product names refer to reflective workwear designed to prevent accidents at work by maximizing visibility. Whether you are looking for a hi-vis overall or a reflective overall, they must meet exactly the same strict safety requirements and certifications to guarantee the wearer's safety.
What requirements does a reflective overall meet?
Safety comes first, which is why a reflective overall must comply with strict legal guidelines. The most important European standard for this is EN ISO 20471, which specifies the requirements for high visibility clothing.
This standard is divided into three classes, with class 3 offering the highest degree of visibility. When work is carried out along the (motor)way or railway, it is legally mandatory for the total equipment to meet at least class 3. A full reflective overall often achieves this high class on its own, because the surface area of fluorescent and reflective material on the body is very large.
What other requirements can reflective overalls meet?
In addition to the standard visibility rating, a reflective overall can also be certified for other specific working conditions. This includes protection against rain and wind via the rain standard EN 343, or the updated international rain standard EN ISO 24232.
Do you need to work in environments with explosion hazards or open flames? Then special Multinorm overalls are available. These advanced overalls are not only reflective, but also offer flame-retardant, antistatic, and chemical-resistant properties. Check our page on workwear standards for a complete overview of all certifications.
What types of reflective overalls are there?
- Reflective overalls: The classic, full reflective overall offers protection and visibility from ankles to neck. Ideal for all-round work in construction and logistics where the entire body needs to be protected against dirt and hazards.
- Reflective bib and brace overalls: These bib and brace overalls, also known as dungarees, have convenient shoulder straps. The hi-vis bib and brace overalls offer extra freedom of movement in the upper body and are perfect to combine with a hi-vis T-shirt or sweater.
- Reflective bodywarmers: A reflective bodywarmer extends over the chest and back for extra warmth and protection. These comfortable bodywarmers are very popular among professionals who frequently bend and kneel during their work.
- RWS Bodywarmer: Specifically designed according to the guidelines of Rijkswaterstaat (Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management). These bodywarmers meet the specific RWS workwear requirements, including the mandatory vertical reflective strips over the shoulders and a specific color scheme for railway and road workers.
- RWS overalls: These RWS overalls are an absolute must for anyone working on Dutch infrastructure. The RWS overalls are immediately recognizable by the specific arrangement of the reflective strips in the shape of a Roman 'II' on the chest.
- Multinorm overalls: For the most demanding and risky work environments, choose multinorm overalls. These combine high visibility with flame-retardant, antistatic, and often arc protection, so you are protected against almost every risk.
- Reflective rain overalls: Working in pouring rain requires waterproof reflective workwear. A reflective rain overall guarantees to keep you dry thanks to waterproof materials and taped seams, without compromising your visibility.
