GORE-TEX: Wat is het en hoe te onderhouden?

GORE-TEX®: What is it and how to maintain it?

GORE-TEX®. You may have seen this name before. But do you know what it is? GORE-TEX® is an industry leader when it comes to providing durable, waterproof, breathable protection. We are happy to tell you more about how GORE-TEX® works.

What is GORE-TEX®?

The GORE-TEX® membrane is a thin layer of stretched Teflon. The membrane is attached to an outer fabric and a lining. GORE-TEX® was developed by the American company WL Gore & Associates. The company developed products for the automotive industry, aerospace and the medical sector, among others.

Waterproof Gore-TEX work boots

Buying the right work clothes and work shoes is essential to carry out your work correctly. You want to stay dry and warm during different weather conditions such as wind, cold, rain or even snow. Work boots made from GORE-TEX® are waterproof work shoes. Even with prolonged use during extreme weather.

Breathable Gore-TEX work boots

It's hard to imagine that a waterproof work shoe is breathable. Yet GORE-TEX® is. The pores are too small to allow water to pass through, but are 700 times larger than droplets of water vapor. This allows GORE-TEX® work shoes and work boots to breathe and allows sweat vapor to leave the fabric. This way your body does not cool down too quickly and you stay warm.

How do you maintain Gore-TEX work shoes and clothing?

Some claim that GORE-TEX® shoes are maintenance-free, but nothing could be further from the truth. The waterproof and breathable lining may be on the inside of the shoe but that does not mean that the outside does not need to be taken care of. Just like with other shoes the upper material of a GORE-TEX® shoe will need to be regularly cleaned, maintained and impregnated. Finally, the GORE-TEX® lining itself also appreciates an occasional wash with shoe polish and a soft brush.

Step 1: Preparation Preparation Gore-tex maintenance

If your shoes have become wet and dirty first let them dry in a well-ventilated area, but not near a heat source. The leather can then dry out or break due to the heat. Remove laces so that the maintenance substances also reach the hidden parts of your shoe. Also remove the insoles from the shoes as a lot of moisture collects here.

Step 2: Basic cleaning Basic cleaning Gore-tex maintenance

Brush the shoes thoroughly so that the leather becomes air-permeable and breathable again. Then clean them with warm water and a brush. If the shoes are very dirty you can use lukewarm water with soap or a shoe cleaner. The cleaning agent opens the pores of the leather and should be rinsed well with water. Let the shoes dry in a well-ventilated area. Please note: not in the sun, in the bathroom, near a heater, near a heater or in the car.

Step 3: Impregnation Impregnating Gore-tex maintenance

Shoes must be slightly damp when you spray them with impregnating spray. The wide open pores allow the impregnation to penetrate deeply into the material. After 24 hours the effect is activated and your shoes are water and dirt-repellent again.

Step 4: Maintenance Maintained Gore-tex

If you wear your shoes often and are often exposed to moisture you should treat them with maintenance products. To do this rub leather gel, a wax cream or wax emulsion into the leather with a soft brush so that the shoes remain robust. Leather that has not been maintained dries out, becomes brittle and cracks. Please note: do not use oil or fat; This makes the leather very soft and closes the pores of the leather, making them no longer breathable.
