Which version suits your work?
- Lots of walking, lifting or switching between indoors and outdoors: compare the flexible Oxford 74291 for water-repellent use, the Dassy Nordix if you want both stretch and waterproofing, or the Kensington 71345 for underarm ventilation. Start with a mid-layer that is not too thick and open the ventilation before you get too warm.
- Standing outdoors in one place for long periods: compare the longer Bifrost parka with a shorter jacket. Look at coverage around your waist and a close-fitting collar, cuffs and hem.
- The same jacket for cold and milder weather: the Tricorp 402003 has a removable inner jacket. That is a more specific difference than simply having ‘versatile’ on the label.

The Kensington has an insulating lining, a waterproof and windproof Helly Tech Professional construction, and underarm ventilation. That ventilation is a specific difference if your working day alternates between strenuous work and quieter tasks. An extended back and adjustable cuffs with wrist snow gaiters help seal the jacket.
When you switch from strenuous work to a quieter task, you can adjust the underarm ventilation without taking the jacket off. Wear a mid-layer that suits your level of activity; a thick fleece is not necessary on every active working day.

4. Tricorp Redefined Ripstop High Vis Winter Jacket 406107
Winter protection when high visibility is needed
The Tricorp 406107 combines a PrimaLoft lining with a waterproof and windproof ripstop outer fabric. The jacket has sealed seams and laminated zips. The fluorescent material and segmented reflective stripes are part of its EN ISO 20471 class 3 certification.
If you have to wear high-vis clothing at your workplace, this is a different choice from a dark jacket with a few reflective accents. Match the required class and version to the workplace requirements. The jacket also has an extended back and a fleece-lined collar for cold outdoor working days.
Do you not need a high-vis version? The Tricorp Redefined 406101 remains an alternative with PrimaLoft and a ripstop outer fabric.

Choosing between a longer parka and a shorter jacket
The Bifrost range combines Helly Tech Professional with insulation, underarm ventilation and CORDURA reinforcements on the shoulders and elbows. Both the Parka 71362 and the Jacket 71360 have Life Pocket compartments. The parka is longer; the jacket is shorter and also has an extended back.
If you work outdoors in one place for long periods, the parka's extra coverage can be welcome. If you often get in and out of a vehicle or kneel frequently, the shorter jacket may be more convenient. Both have underarm ventilation to release heat when you become more active.

Four-way stretch without switching to a water-repellent softshell
The Dassy Nordix has a waterproof and windproof outer fabric with four-way stretch. The Sorona lining provides insulation, and the seams are taped. With its detachable hood, adjustable wrist straps and extended back, you can adapt the jacket to your working posture.
If you do a lot of bending, reaching and climbing, the stretchy outer fabric can be comfortable. Here, stretch is combined with a waterproof jacket construction; that is the difference from the water-repellent Oxford softshell below. Try this jacket on with your work jumper too, so the stretch does not have to compensate for a size that is too tight.
Would you prefer freedom of movement through the cut rather than stretch fabric? The padded Blåkläder 4886 has a back pleat and an extended back.
8. Helly Hansen Oxford Winter Softshell Jacket 74291
A flexible lined softshell for active working days
This Oxford is a different type of jacket from the waterproof versions in this overview. It has a pile-fleece lining and an outer fabric containing 6% elastane. The water-repellent, breathable outer fabric and articulated sleeves support an active working posture. The hood is detachable.
For frequent movement in dry cold, a flexible lined softshell is a practical choice. The water-repellent outer can shed light precipitation. If you spend longer periods in the rain, choose a waterproof version instead: this softshell is not the same as a rain jacket.
What should you consider besides the model?
Warmth and rain protection are separate choices
A warm lining does not automatically make a jacket waterproof. Water-repellent material is intended to repel surface moisture; with a waterproof jacket, seams and fastenings also matter. The Oxford winter softshell is therefore not automatically a substitute for a waterproof winter jacket in persistent rain.

Cold protection may also have been assessed in combination with other clothing, such as matching trousers. The standard does not specify a fixed outdoor temperature at which everyone will stay warm: your activity level and other clothing still matter.
Try it on with your work layer, not just a T-shirt
When trying the jacket on, wear the jumper or fleece you use at work. Reach forward with both arms, raise them and sit down or bend your knees. The jacket should not pull at your shoulders and back; your sleeves should stay in place and your lower back should remain covered. With a parka, check that the extra length does not get in the way when getting into a vehicle.

For prolonged stationary work, the longer Bifrost Parka is a logical jacket to consider: it covers more of your hips and upper legs than the shorter Bifrost Jacket. What is the difference between a parka and a padded jacket?
‘Parka’ mainly describes the longer design. ‘Padded’ describes an insulating filling between the inner and outer fabric. A parka can therefore also be padded. So do not choose solely on the name parka: also consider the lining and the coverage you need during your work.
